Your Turn – Thrift Stores: Trash or Treasure?

This week I’m going to be exploring the idea of thrift stores but before I do I need some advice on ones that you love or hate in the Chicagoland/NWI area. Please leave a comment and lemme know!

Cheers!

I always find great clothes at the Village Outlet in Hammond, IN. They have lots of designer stuff if you take the time to look. I also go there for odd stuff I can make into new stuff… like I made a whole wreath out of sweaters I bought from there for about $10 bucks. They have tons and tons of baby clothes on the back wall! I got a whole bunch of good clothes there for my niece. The Thrift Store on Kennedy in Highland, IN has some nice stuff. I go there for toys for my niece when she comes to visit. PAWs in Highland is awesome! They have tons of nice vintage stuff for moderate prices. I love old costume jewelry. There’s a lady who has a toy store in Lisle (kidsheaveninlisle.com) in her garage. She’s about a 50 minute drive but has some of the bigger toys and its a nice night out if you want to go to IKEA in Bolingbrook or Naperville. Let me know if there are more local stores that are good. I would love to go to some of the antique stores in Whiting… if you get out there, let me know the good ones.

  2. My favorite thrift store is on Grand in Gurnee, its called Community thrift. They do not accept donations because they purchase all their items from donation banks, so only the best items get put out. Often the first price on the item is higher than I like to pay for 2nd hand, but each week they lower it so I end up paying a resonable price.

Here is a post on how thrift store may change in the next couple months http://www.commonsensewithmoney.com/2009/01/the-end-of-secondhand-clothes-for-out-children/

I go to the Harvest and my mom volunteers there. It’s always very neat and clean! If you haven’t already, you should really check it out. It’s on the corner of Burnham and River Oaks Drive, I think it’s considered Cal City…

  4. I’m so excited that you are exploring the thrift store topic! My friends and I love, love, love to thrift shop. I enjoy the local Goodwill stores – snagged an awesome wooden rocking horse for $5 for my grandson at the Munster Goodwill. Currently among my favorite stores are two spots in Highland – the Bibles for Missions store on Highway Ave. and Hearts in Motion on 45th Ave. Both are connected with truly worthwhile causes.

The best thrift store in the area, is by far Restoration Ministries ~ South Holland, IL. The profits are for a wonderful ministry as well. It is off Rt. 6 (159th ST West) off the Bishop Ford. Tons of furniture, take a truck. They also take donations!

The goodwill in Lansing is one of my favorites and they have 75% off one specific color on Sunday and Mondays.

Recently I made a donation drop to our local salvation army and was stunned to see huge bins just overloaded with items that people had recently donated.
I am guessing that after everyone got brand new stuff, they donated all the ‘not so new’ items which were replaced.
It was kind of sad that Americans would give away such nice items when I’m sure that they had many years of more use left on them. I am guessing that all thrift stores are going to have amazing things because of the holidays.

  8. In Chicago, my favorite one is The Village Discount Outlet. There are a few in the city, but I’m not sure if there are any in the burbs. You have to hunt, but we have been able to snag some great finds there.

  9. My parents work at the Harvest Thrift store that benefits Lansing Christian…they are always bringing treasures home for my boys!

Hi, I am a newbie to your site and I love it! Thank you for all the great tips. We are thrift store junkies, and yes, we do have a favorite. Unique in Merrillville is our top pick but, we only go on Mondays. Every Monday everything is half price (otherwise they are a little higher priced than some others). As with all of them, it takes time and lots of rummaging but, it has proven to be well worth it. Our latest bargain find…a children’s Wilsons leather coat with hood and everything (looked brand new) for $20. We looked it up online after we got home and it retails for $360!! Our daughter felt like she hit the jackpot!

There is a thrift store on 61st and Broadway (where the old Zayre store used to be, on the southwest corner), that I used to frequent. It is called Unique Boutique. I haven’t been there in quite a white, but Monday used to be half off of most things (they use a color coded tag system). I am not sure if they still do that or not. I always had good luck there, but like any other thrift store, make sure that you check the item carefully.

  12. Restoration Ministries in South Holland, IL is my favorite. Very large store, lots of furniture, and supporting a wonderful ministry! They take donations too! Bring your truck.

If you have time and enjoy shopping thrift stores can be a lot of fun. They are also a nice outlet if you want to just go shopping, but want a more affordable option.

  14. I shop at the Unique Thrift Store on Sibley Blvd. (147th St.) in Dolton (IL) on Mondays when all items are half price. It’s like a treasure hunt for me (of course, there’s plenty of trash, too).

I LALALALOVE thrift stores and could spend HOURS in them! I know, I know… most people think “YUCK!” but I swear to you I find some awesome things! I find clothes from Express, Old Navy, and other name brands. I also find tons of things for my house. Even if I have to spruce it up a little. Its just like a yard sale in a building. They always have sales too. I filled my trunk for $20. After Christmas the decorations were 3 for $1!! I got some decorations with tags on them and will make great gifts for next year! Its on 26 st in Chicago Heights.

  17. I enjoy going to the area thrift stores!! One of my favorites is the Goodwill on Ridge Road in Lansing. Il. On Sunday and Monday they have a managers special 75% off a specific color tag and twice a month on Saturdays 50% of everything!! You can find some great deals!!

  18. I hope it is okay to mention this here, if not please forgive me and delete this. I love thrift stores. So, when I was made aware of this legislation last week it saddened me. There is a Consumer Protection Safety legislation that is to be voted on February 10. While it began with the best intentions to help protect us from the lead which was recently found in products imported into our country. If this concerns you, as it does me, look up the CPSIA legislation and let your voice be heard.

  19. Just Like New in Crown Point is great for women and kids. They are not garage sale prices but you can find great higher end kids clothing~Gap, Gymboree, Lands End, Hanna Andersson, ect. They have a great selection of girls infant and toddler stuff! If I’m buying gently used kids’ stuff I prefer higher end brands b/c they wash/wear better and tend to be in better shape than store brands. My garage sale in June is stocked with name brand too! 🙂

The CPSC new guidelines have been re-framed so that thrift stores should not be effected! Yeah!

  20. Morning Star Mission (Joliet Il homeless shelter) has a new Thrift Shop (used to be Berry’s) on Route 30 in New Lenox, Il across from the Lowe’s /Target store. They will take donations and usually send a !5% off coupon after you visit on your next purchase. Large store. They are new and are looking to update the store and parking area soon.

Restoration Ministries in South Holland is great like others mentioned. What others haven’t told you is that they have a little of everything. Books, sporting equipment (I have gotten baseball shoes for my kids) baby things, toys, furniture and lots of clothes and shoes. They have a large assortment of mattresses also. The mattresses are new, I think they are seconds or something. Wednesdays are the special day when sections of the store are half off what it is marked.
