Whole Wheat Bread Recipe For Breadmaker

Breadmaker Bread

Years ago I was given my Husband’s Grandma’s breadmaker and a recipe book which included this whole wheat bread recipe for breadmaker. It collected dust for a while then I’d pull it out and use it. Back to the closet. Rinse and repeat until about 3 months ago when I decided to take a huge step and cleaned our house out of anything with 5 ingredients or more.

Mac n Cheese: toss
Boxed crackers: toss
Bread with 10 ingredients I can’t pronounce and it lasts for 4 weeks without refrigeration? TOSS TOSS TOSS!

Yeah when I do something, I go ALL in and so guess what moved upstairs and got dusted off? This time though it’s in an easy-to-reach closet and is now out once or twice a week as besides being less processed to make, if I’m going to do this we’re doing it on a budget and whole wheat breadmaker bread is just wayyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper. I use Bob’s Red Mill’s whole wheat flour and honey and boy oh boy is it yummy and still less than $1 a loaf. I always make the biggest size I can and yet when I serve it with butter (real butter with less than 5 ingredients!) then it goes re-ally quick!

Whole Wheat Bread Recipe for the Breadmaker Ingredients

* This makes a 1.5 pound loaf – I wouldn’t make any less!

  • 1 1/4 cups of milk
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • 1 TBS butter
  • 3 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 2 TBS honey
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Add the above ingredients to your breadmaker and cook.
If you want to add a grain add 3/4 tsp sesame seeds, 2 TBS rolled oats or 2 tsp oat groats.

  1. Claire! I have just started baking my own bread. I’m not supposed to eat it, but I can’t stand the idea of the kids eating the store bought stuff! I’ve made 3 loaves so far, and still trying to perfect my recipe… or find a better one. Then looky what I find here. I’ll definitely be trying this. I’ll let you know if it’s Kid Approved 😉

  2. deanna boyd says:

what setting do you bake this on? I am very interested in this

  3. Christina says:

I made this today and it was like a half load. Is it supposed to look like that?

    • Mine makes over a half loaf but my breadmaker couldn’t handle more for the dough. You could always double the recipe if your breadmaker allows. Hope that helps!

  4. What setting do you use if cooking in crockpot?

  5. Mine is now in the bread machine!!!! I’m so excited to try this recipe out 🙂

  6. kristie b says:

do you add the ingredients in a certain order?

    • Yes according to your breadmaker. All are different and some like butter on top while others don’t. Mine does liquids and yeast first then others on top.

  7. Namrata says:

Hey Clair I made this bread today not in crockpot but in Oven and it turned out so yumm!! Thanks you for sharing this recipe. I am so happy to have take one more step forward towards feeding my kids a healthy food.. They loved it!! My 3 yr old just gobbled it all!! And my 10 month old ate it too.. 🙂

  8. Nina George says:

Question: Do you use whole milk? And have you ever tried the whole wheat pastry flour in this recipe?

  9. I have been using Almond Milk in the recipe. I am not for sure if that is what makes this bread crumbling and doesn’t stick together well when I go to slice it. Do you have any recipe alterations when using Almond Milk instead of Vitamin D Milk? Thanks!

The bread does have such a yummy taste and I do add some ground up flax seed to add some extra goodness.

    • OOOOO yum flax seed! Sadly I don’t have any recipes with the almond milk. I haven’t tried yet. If you do let us know!

  10. Oh have also been substituting Agave for honey. Once again, any problem with this? Consistency seemed that same as honey.

  11. Do you have to use honey?

  12. I had a really bad experience the first time. Appears it wasn’t anything to do about the recipe. It was my Walmart yeast. Tried it a second time with Gordon Foods yeast, and by this time I was out of milk so I used up some fruit juice-mango juice instead. Added 2 T. ground flax and a T of gluten flour. Excellent! Making more for sure.

  13. Do you warm up the milk and melt the butter and then add it to the bread maker?? My loaf turned out really small it tastes good and I had it on the 1.5 size loaf.

    • I didn’t. Sorry to hear that 🙁 Maybe check the way you add ingredients as per your breadmaker. Hope that helps!

    • Mary Whitehead says:

I’ve had four different breadmakers over the years and they have all specified that the yeast goes in last. I make a thumbprint dent in my flour and drop the yeast into that so that it is kept away from the liquid until ready to be mixed. If you have the breadmaker on the wholewheat setting, then it will warm the water (or milk) to the right temperature to dissolve the yeast before it starts mixing and kneading, so it is important for the yeast not to touch the liquid until it has been warmed.

  14. Do you have to use honey?

  15. Does whole wheat flour rise at all? Does it turn out fluffy and soft like normal bread? Really want to make a soft whole wheat bread without mixing with plain bread flour.

I was told vital wheat gluten will help but I don’t know how much to add or replace the flour. Any help please?

  16. I haven’t been making bread for a while but i would use white wheat instead of red the kids liked it better and the texture was lighter. Not white flour, white wheat, I would grind it myself. I would also often mix in other grains or beans when I ground the flour. I loved my hammermill.

  17. Betsy Hartmann says:

Wondering why you labeled this as a bread recipe for a slow cooker, but then proceeded to lay it out as for a bread maker. Could you list the ingredients in the correct order as well as any instructions for combining them. Also, “Normal Setting” for the slow cooker doesn’t clarify how to bake it.
