Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. It is traditional to fly your American flag at half mast from dawn until noon on the actual day.
What is Memorial Day About?
Memorial Day is a federal holiday so all non-essential government offices are closed. Many people view it as the first weekend of summer so lots of people head out of town for the long weekend.
Many towns hold remembrance services for those who’d died and lots of people take time to go to cemeteries and lay American flags on the graves of the deceased.
It’s also a family time and Picnics and family gatherings are a popular thing to do on Memorial Day. Fashion observers used to believe that it was ok to start wearing white shoes and clothes between now and Labor Day although most people don’t do that anymore.
