The news that Wonder Bread and Hostess brands were no more came as a devastating blow last year to Twinkies fans. I’ve never been a fan of the “delicacy” but I was saddened by the loss of thousands of American jobs. A day after the news was announced my Husband and I were driving past a local health food store and Tim was shocked, “Wow, it’s packed!” He said. To which I responded, “It’s why Twinkies couldn’t survive.”
I may not be a market analyst (and I’m grateful that it looks like the brand may be saved by savvy investors) but surely the reason that they couldn’t make it was in part due to a brand that’s trying to market two things we love to hate: white bread and sweets. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a Big Mac just as much as the next person but I’m trying to eat wheat grass and flax-seed every day as apposed to fries and pink slime as I’m sure most of you are.
When I started Mummy Deals over 4 years ago it was for a couple of reasons:
1) I’m a journalist by trade and love to write
2) I got diapers for 20 cents a pack and friends wanted to me to teach them
3) Isaac was a VERY busy 6 month old and I needed an outlet for my creativity
Years on and I’ve found out something about me: I don’t coupon nearly as much as I used to and especially not on food. We live in an area that doesn’t double coupons and what little couponing we used to be able to do has been almost destroyed by “that show”. Read 4 Reasons I Hate Extreme Couponing for more info. There are no coupons for fruit, veggies and meat and dairy.
I am a frugal living girl. We made lots of homemade presents for Christmas and each year my kids get a homemade birthday party (Isaac’s Monster Jam one was a big hit). I love fruits, veggies and feeding my family real food. I love sharing Slow Cooker Monday recipes and creating fun crafts like this Valentine’s Day playdough that will cost you less than 10 cents a child for their “playmates”
Most of my readers are Mums and when I polled some the response was overwhelming, “I don’t read you for the coupons as they confuse me, I read you for the kids ideas, the easy recipes and cupcake fun and for the encouragement for Mums!”
Over Christmas my Husband and I prayed and prayed. I was putting in 40 hours a week and it wasn’t worth it. My family was feeling the pinch of me being busy and I was tired and cranky. So the new Mummy Deals was born. The thing is I love blogging and I really love pinning. I love trying new ideas and sharing them with others. I want to bring you more frugal ideas and less coupons so please if you’re reading this in an email head to the newly designed site. Pixel Me Designs did a fab job reflecting the new improved me. The one who loves a Big Mac occasionally but would rather try and feed her family healthy meals. Things made from scratch that cost less.
I know some of you may want to unsubscribe and move on. Please don’t. I’ve enjoyed this journey with thousands of you and would hate it to end here. There will still be HOT Deals when I see them and coupons and specific sales I see around town.
Instead, join me in this new phase as I try to be a better wife, mummy, friend and homemaker. Anyone with me?
