Please go vote!!!

I posted this on October 16th but now the election is here and the state I live in is undecided I really would like to encourage people to please go vote!

It’s hard isn’t it this time? I know from people I’ve talked to that it seems hard to pick a candidate. Maybe it’s that we’re not convinced by either of them or dislike what they’re saying. I’m not going to tell you which way to vote nor do I want to open this up for political discussion but I do just want to make the point that it is CRUCIAL that you vote. This is probably the biggest election of our time so far and we need to have a say. I’m not thrilled by either candidates but I will be voting according to my conscience.

Need another reason to vote?

  • Go to your local Starbucks and tell them you voted and they’ll give you a cup of joe! More details here.
  • Free scoop of ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s between 4-8pm when you show them your “I voted” sticker. Details here.
  • Free donut from Krispy Kremes for voting here

Stand Up and Be Counted – First published 10/16/08

This year has been very momentous for me – on January 17th I became a US citizen and on February 14th I became a Mummy.

Two very important things, two things I don’t take lightly. After 9 years of forms, checks at the airport as I entered the US and lots of money, I took my oath and proudly became a dual citizen. One of the reasons I’m so excited that I got to take the oath is that I get to vote. It’s an honour that I’m not taking lightly.

On the down side, I have never seen a campaign go on for so long or candidates bicker so much. In England there are no negative ads, nobody can really outwardly bash the other person and in a lot of ways I prefer it. When this election started 18 months ago I couldn’t believe it. Now as we’re nearing the end I’m ready for life to “return to normal”. No more debates about lipstick and pigs, no more SNL appearances of Tina Fey’s Palin and no more bashing each other.
What I can’t understand is how much time has been devoted to the campaigns and how much money has been spent on them. Am I the only one who thinks that while the economy is crashing Obama’s comment about lipstick and pigs shouldn’t have made the main news? Am I the only one that is sick to the back teeth of the amount of money spent on campaigning while people in New Orleans still suffer from Katrina? I don’t want this to turn into a political post, merely a small point I wanna make from my mini soapbox I’ve created here!

As a new citizen, I’m going to be first in line to vote. I am excited and ready to let my voice be heard. It’s something I won’t be taking lightly and I’d encourage you to do the same. As Mums we need to have a say in what goes on from here on out. We need to have our voices heard that ensure a good future for our kids. I’m worried what schools will look like when Isaac is ready to go. I really don’t want to homeschool and we can’t afford private schools so I want to ensure public schools are given money and resources. I’m concerned about the environment, about how much land is taken up by shops and houses. I feel sick when I think that some people simply can’t afford health insurance. These are all things that mattered to me in the past but matter more now.

If you’re disgusted by all the money spent on campaigning or believe we need good leadership for the mess we’re in, please go vote. Take heed from one who fought hard to get this privilege. It’s something I won’t take lightly and I encourage you not to. Let’s stand up as Mums and let our voice be heard!
