Patriotic Trifle

Patriotic Trifle

I just love taking flag desserts to backyard bbqs for holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July or Labor Day and that’s why for the 4th of July I brought this Patriotic Trifle.

In England we ate trifle a lot but it was always just lady fingers and custard.  over here there’s tons of different trifles including the yummy Brownie Trifle  recipe my Mother in law shared with me for the blog. This Patriotic Trifle is made using the best of summer berries and then some very naughty ingredients like sweetened condensed milk. To skinny it up make sure you use all fat free and then I’m not going to lie: there aren’t many ways to skinny this up! Here’s the recipe, enjoy!

Patriotic Trifle

  • An angel food cake
  • 12 oz fat free whipped topping
  • Vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 + 1/2 cups of cold water
  • 2LB strawberries, sliced thin
  • 2 pints blueberries
  • 6 TBS sweetened condensed milk

  1. Using a star cookie cutter cut out a few stars out of the angel food cake. Cut the rest into cubes
  2. Whisk together the condensed milk and water.
  3. Then add the pudding mix and let stand for a couple of minutes until it sets.
  4. Fold in the whipped topping.
  5. Put half of the cake in the bottom of the trifle bowl.
  6. Next layer blueberries on top.
  7. Spoon half the cream mix over the top and spread around.
  8. Cover with strawberries
  9. Place some of the stars around the side of the bowl so they're facing out. Layer the rest of the cake on top of the strawberries and behind the stars.
  10. Layer more blueberries finished with more cream mix.
  11. On the top of the cream arrange your berries in the shape of the American flag.
  12. Cover and place in the fridge for 1 hour before serving.

Doesn’t it look fab swirled in?

Cut small slices of angel food cake to get the stars.

Patriotic Trifle

As you can see the stars aren’t super easy to see and it was a little time consuming so maybe something I’ll skip next time.

Pool parties are a ton of fun and if you’re headed to one, this cupcakes recipe for Pool Party Cake Pops is a fun dessert to take with you or the Flip Flop Cake Balls.
