Why I’d Probably Have Made a Terrible Mary

I was reading my Bible this morning about the birth of Jesus and came upon this,

Luke 1: 27-33 (The Message)

Gabriel greeted her:

Good morning!
You’re beautiful with God’s beauty,
Beautiful inside and out!
God be with you.

She was thoroughly shaken, wondering what was behind a greeting like that. But the angel assured her, “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.”

I read the rest of the chapter and then prayed and asked God for wisdom. I sat there and pondered…..there is NO way I’d have reacted like that! I KNOW that God gives us grace for every season we’re in and if I was there I’d have been given the grace needed but as it stands there’s NO way.

I’d have been beyond shocked. In fact if I’m honest there would have been a whole bunch of laughing, a lot of hysteria, some tears mixed in with a gentle smattering of doubt.

Then I’d probably have taken a moment to mention to God just what I thought of His plan, ya know just in case He thought I was a good choice.

Although He’s never asked me to do what He asked of Mary He’s asked things of me that if I’m honest I’ve turned my nose up at.

As girls we think we have to have it all together. We think that if it’s out of control a slight amount then it’s an indication of how well WE’RE doing.

And we beat ourselves up and listen to lies like…

Kids acting up? It’s not winter cabin fever it’s you as a Mom!
Dishes out of control? It’s your fault that you were so tired after a long day to clean up!
Nobody and nothing is listening to you? Yell a little louder, maybe it’s just your voice!

I’ve beaten myself up and listened to the lies instead of listening to what God says about me. But when God calls us He equips us and just like He equipped Mary back then He’s equipped us for whatever season of life we’re in. It may be the toughest thing you’ve been through but He is with you. The Bible talks so many times of the way He feels about us and His lavish love for us. Let’s look at some of those verses. Feel free to write some down for today and let them be your anthem.

Let them be your battle cry roar! Sometimes with my kids the best thing to do is go in the bathroom and declare loudly some of these promises and stir myself up in God before coming out of there.

Deuteronomy 4:37 New International Version (NIV)
37 Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength.

Romans 8:37-39 NIV
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8
…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God. who loved me and gave himself for me.

Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

I truly believe we get grace for each moment if we ask.

What’s your moment today? Ask God and then whatever it is: SHINE SISTER SHINE!

Luke 1: 36 The Message
And Mary said,

Yes, I see it all now:
I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve.
Let it be with me
just as you say.

Then the angel left her.

  1. I loved this post! Yes, it is so important for us to remember “when God calls us He equips us”.
