Homemade Cough Syrup

Cough Syrup

Isaac has been coughing quite a bit the last 24 hours and while I LOVE Honey Elixir I figured Homemade Cough Syrup had to be cheaper and easier. When I say easier I’ve pretty much got a house full of basic natural ingredients {read honey and coconut oil} that I seem to need in everything nowadays so it’s easier than a quick to the drugstore sometimes! Anyway, 5 minutes later while making breakfast I also made this Homemade Cough syrup for it.

Homemade Cough Syrup Ingredients and Directions

In a small pan heat up the following ingredients on low heat:

  • 3 TBS lemon juice (I used the juice of half a lemon)
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 2 TBS coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Cough Syrup

  • Store in a small container or mason jar for up to a month in the fridge.
  • When you need it take it out and shake as the coconut oil rises to the top.
  • Give your child about 1 teaspoon.

  1. great recipe! i am making this today, since we just ran out of our store-bought natural honey cough syrup and my almost 2 yr old is still hacking. 🙁 the snow storm is putting a damper on running to the store, so this recipe could seriously not have come at a better time!! thanks! 🙂

  2. Brittany says:

Thanks for the recipe!! I’m going to try this today! 🙂 How often would you say I can I give it to my 4 year old?

  3. This is great! I am trying to garlic in my 6 month old’s socks tonight. he has been battling a congested cough (thanks to daycare) for months. can I try the cough syrup yet, is the honey safe for his age?

  4. How do I dissolve the cinnamon? I gave it to my 20 month old & she started coughing I believe it from the strong taste of the cinnamon. Maybe I didn’t heat it long enough. Thank you in advance!

  5. Thanks for the remedy, I will try this for my 7 yr old daughter. I wanted to make a bigger patch, how should I measure for a bigger quantity?

  6. I made a double patch. I have 3 year old twins who will be starting preschool soon. I’m sure this will go quick. One already is coughing. Btw, this smells amazing!! Lol

  7. How long do I need to boil it for?

  8. Does it have to be refrigerated? It made it super thick I couldn’t shake it up .

  9. Could you use line juice? All out of lemon. 🙁

  10. Looking for a review of its ability to relieve the cough….

  11. Mine looks super dark and watery?

  12. Is it good for elder people. My mom is coughing badly since last few days. Please help thanks.

  13. Thank you so much for this! Cough medicine has never worked on my daughter (now 5) not do I like the ingredients in today’s medicine. She has allergies and gets sick every 3 months or so. She’ll throw up for a whole day because of all the mucus she swallows. I expected to have one of those days yesterday and I found this recipe, made it and have her 1 dose. No throwing up and her cough was cut in half! Today she’s blowing her nose and feeling much better. Took another dose this morning too. Her cough normally lasts about a week. Today she had coughed hardly at all. This is going to save a lot of miserable days for us in the future. Thank you so much!!

  14. Hi! 🙂 I made this recipe for my 2 yr old daughter last night, it worked great! But when I put it on the fridge all night on a Mason jar, in the morning I wanted to give her a spoonful to her again and it was hard except for the honey that was under but the top layer (looks white) it was hard as ice, why did that happen? I didn’t put on the freezer or anything :/ I put all the ingredients like it says on your recipe. Hope to hear from you soon 🙂
