Healthy New Year!!

A reader, Lisa, just emailed this, “We are looking into gym memberships. Could you do a bit about gym memberships? We are looking at the YMCA and Cardinal fitness. But would love some other people’s advise. We are only a limited budget but want to be healthful.”

  • If you are in the NWI area, where is a good budget-friendly place to join?
  • If you are not, where do you go in your area?
  • Finally, I’ll get in on this and say that I’m looking for somewhere to swim only in the area, anyone got any ideas on a budget?

Please leave a comment and help Lisa and I out!

  1. My husband and I live in NW Indiana and we go to Cardinal Fitness. They have one in Schererville and one in Hobart….they have others but these are the two we use. You can visit any location with your id # which is awesome! I think that it is $20 a month for him and $12 for me so $32 a month for couples. They have family deals also, but $20 a month per person is pretty cheap I think!

I belong to Lifetime Fitness in Algonquin and it is wonderful. It is a little more expensive than Cardinal and a YMCA, but it offers babysitting–which is key for my family. They are also open 24/7, which I need because I work out at 4:30am before I go to work.

I believe enrollment is free, which saves about $300 (which I paid last year to join 🙁 ).

    Good luck!

I am with Snicki. I had a Cardinal membership for amost a year and loved it. (quite b/c I started running outside during the summer) There is a initation fee (sometimes you can find coupons to get a deal) but the $20 a month without an actualy 1-2 year contract like most gyms, I think, is a pretty good deal.

MY MOTHERINLAW AND I JUST JOINED CARDINAL TODAY WITH THEIR NEAT DEAL OF A ONE TIME FEE OF $18 DOLLARS TO JOIN INSTEAD OF THEIR USUAL $99! THIS DEAL IS ONLY GOOD TIL THE 31ST WHICH IS THIS SATURDAY, SO JOIN FAST! OF COURSE THERE IS STILL THE $20 A MONTH CHARGE BUT NO CONTRACT SO IF WE DON’T FIND IT USEFULL WE CAN CANCEL ANYTIME.
WE GO THE THE MERRILLVILLE CARDINAL. THE STAFF IS SUPER NICE, AS WELL. THEY ALSO HAVE A DAYCARE FOR $3 AN HOUR OR $12 A MONTH.

  5. Our Y may get a little pricey, but remember all the perks! All aerobics classes are now included. We also have free childcare while parents are in the building, use of the indoor pool, discounted swim classes and sports for the kids, the list goes on and on! It is around $100 to join, and $52 each month for ALL of us.

  6. I have been a member at they ymca for years now. I love that first of all there is FREE babysitting. Your membership provides you with access to the pool for lap and open swim times, open gym time, along with weight and cardio room and all aerobic type classes. Plus there are lots of programs for kids and adults that you can join. The cost for a family is $52 a month, but if you volunteer there only 2-3 hours a week it is half price. Only $26 a month! Not too shabby for a large family like mine!!!

I live in NW Indiana/Crown Point. My family loves the YMCA in Crown Point. I can work out most anytime. They have open swimming, great swimming lessons, lots of exercise classes, trainers….the whole deal. There is a game room that my kids enjoy also if I really need to work out and the pool is not available for open swim or the gym for open gym. It figures out to $50/month for our family and we can all be involved. I was previously doing the Curves thing and that was over $30/month just for myself. Great people and great wholesome atmosphere also.

  8. I’d check with your health insurance. We have Blue Cross/Blue Shield and they offer discounts to a number of health clubs. Because of that, my wife and I were able to join Omni. Two pools, free childcare for up to 2 hours a day, free classes, open 24 hours a day. The discount made it possible for us to do.

  9. My family belongs to Fitness Advantage. Located in Manhattan, Monee and Wilmington, IL.
They offer a lifetime membership-it was $16 for the first member, $12 for the second and $8 for the third (over 12 years of age).
The Manhattan and Monee locations are open to members 24 hours. They have limited child care hours so check first.
Very clean facility and friendly staff (usually on site from 8-12 noon and again from 4-8 pm)
There is a one time registration fee (can’t remember how much) and the monthly charge is paid with automatic withdrawl to keep the rate.
My son (14 years) asked if he could live with us until he’s 40 just to stay on our plan!!

  10. For anyone living in the LincolnWay School District (New Lenox, Manhattan, Frankfort, or Mokena area) you can register at the PE department at the High Schools (Central, East, or North and Fall 2009 when it opens-West) and obtain a pass to walk the indoor track anytime it is open.
    No strollers/childcare.
They also have a pool program-free swim and classes.
Mokena Park District Oak Center has free walking indoor track for anyone to use-resident or not.
