Hammond’s Hidden Treasures

Lisa:
When my husband and I were newlyweds we moved to South Hammond into our “starter house”. Little did we know that almost seven years and three kids later, we would have planted roots here.

I wanted to share some “Best of Hammond” things we have found along the way:

Hammond Salvage and Resale
6730 Columbia Avenue Hammond IN 46324
(219) 937-9315
I hestitated sharing about this place, because quite frankly it’s been my little secret. The owner Mary has a diverse selection of you name it. Every day she is bringing in a trailer full of finds. It’s a place to put on the ‘hit every once in a while’ list. A TON of the stuff is junk, but there are some real treasures as well. It is a series of interconnected buildings that seem to go on and on. I think my best find there was a 16’x8′ rug for $25 for my living room. I have seen comparable ones at home boutiques for $450!
A couple of tips: They are closed Sundays and open most other days 11am-6pm. Not a great place to bring a two year old. Not stroller friendly. Although on occasion I have done both. Not a lot of things are marked, and every price is negotiable.

South Shore Arts, Substation No. 9
435 Fayette Street Hammond, IN 46320
(219) 933-0200
This unique place offers classes in painting, drawing, art studio (mixed media), airbrushing, photoshop/illustrator, a Senior Art Workshop and more. Our daughter has gone here on numerous fieldtrips with her preschool class. She LOVES it! All the programs are half of to Hammond residents, but are VERY inexpensive to all.

El Taco Real
935 Hoffman Street Hammond, IN 46327-1838

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the area.

Hammond Public Library
564 State Street Hammond, Indiana 46320
(219) 931-5100
We really enjoy the main campus library in downtown Hammond. It’s large two story building with a HUGE Children’s wing. Friendly librarian’s. Great selection.

Towle Theater
5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond, IN 46320
(219)937-8780
This performing arts live theater is perhaps the biggest gem of Hammond. Located in downtown Hammond. It’s home to high quality, low cost theater. Season tickets for all four shows are a mere $45! No fees and no parking costs.
They also host school musical performanaces, theater camps, Improv training, and BEER tasting classes!
