Fall Fun in NW Indiana

There’s lots to do in Northwest Indiana this fall that’s for sure and here is the list for fall 2012 with thanks to Cathy for her input too!

For HUGE discounts on other fun things to do in Northwest Indiana Chicago and other cities, I highly recommend these links. They’ve all been featuring local pumpkin farms and fall fests for super cheap.

      1. the Groupon where for they always have deals and bargains for local attractions.
      2. Living Social
      3. Goldstar. Not only do they have great tickets to great events but they have discount tickets to Medieval Times which is an AMAZING place to spend the day with the kiddos and Goldstar has tickets for HALF OFF!

Ongoing

County Line Orchard.

Sure the parking lot is full on weekends and the lines are longer but unlike a lot of my friends who last year seemed unhappy with how popular it has become I’m delighted that this small business in Hobart Indiana has become a hub of fall activity. Although the bad weather this year has meant there’s no apple picking, it’s still a great place to head with your family. Make sure you sample the pumpkin spiced donut and wash it down with some yummy apple slush before you head off around the corn maze or take a $1 tractor ride.

Scheeringa’s Petting Zoo

Scheering’as in Griffith has a great petting zoo that’s free except for the food to feed the animals (around 25 cents) They also have hay rides (11.30am -4pm on Saturdays and a pumpkin bounce for just $2.

Bonfires

It’s cooler weather which is a perfect time to invite friends over for a bonfire. Make some baked potatoes or chili and snuggle up as you watch the flames flicker before divulging in a smore…or two.

Indiana Dunes

The Indiana Dunes are amazing year round and the road to them is a great drive to experience the fall colors. Stop off on the way in Michigan City for a bite to eat.

Hay Rides

Find a local spot to get a hay ride with your kids. I like Scheeringa’s in Griffith or Elzingas in Dyer.

Magnificent Pumpkin Display.

Every year we look forward to the amazing pumpkin on display in Griffith at a local resident’s house. John Barenie of 917 East Miller grows his own pumpkins in a plot a few doors down and then spends hours decorating them. For the last week of October each year it’s free to go view the pumpkins and is one of our favorite excursions. Past themes include Monopoly, Charlie Brown and Snoopy and Cinderella.

Kregel’s Pumpkin Patch

Located in Lowell, Kregel’s offers tractor pulled hayrides out to the field so you can pick your own pumpkin or there are pumpkins at the farm stand for you to choose from. They also have two corn-mazes, a petting zoo, pony rides, a baby chick hatchery, the pumpkin express train, and a pumpkin sling shot for your family to enjoy as well as delicious kettle corn.
