English Recipe Corner – Mince Pies for Christmas

This week my English friend and I made this recipe but didn’t do it quite right and they were a bit of a disaster although they tasted great! They’re like a sweet cookie type thingy (good description huh??!) and we ate ours with whipped cream and cheese and tea of course!!!

Mince Pies (as famous as tea during Christmas in England)

4 OZS SR FLOUR
1 OZ MARG
1 TEASP SUGAR
1 AND A HALF OZ LARD (YEAH, HUH! CAN USE SHORTENING!!)
PINCH OF SALT
4 TBS MILK
MINCEMEAT (CAN BE PURCHASED AT JEWEL IN A JAR. MAYBE ALSO AT MEIJER OR TRADER JOE’S OR WORLD MARKET)

  • Work the fat into the flour and saltuntil crumbly
  • Roll out quite thin and cut into large and small circles
  • Place large circle in muffin tray and put 1 teaspoon mincemeat on the base
  • Wet the edge of the base and place small circle on top pressing round edges with fingers
  • Place 2 slits in each mince pie to let steam out
  • Cut out small stars and leaves and stick on top of pie
  • Brush milk over top of pie
  • Bake in oven at 325 degrees for 10 – 15 mins

  1. Yum!! We always sift confectioner’s sugar on top of ours. How much does Mincemeat run you at Jewel? I found it at my local Fred Meyer and it was six bucks per jar. So I was over the moon when I found it on clearance at Safeway a while back – .99 cents each!! I bought them all, and I still have about six jars in the cupboard. And that was before I stockpiled with coupons, lol.
