I remember having this meal when I was young. My mom would heat up her griddle on top of the stove, cook the hamburger patties and then throw them between two slices of bread and toast sandwich up on each side, just like a grilled cheese sandwich. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about eating a burger between two pieces of sliced bread. If you want to jazz your sandwich up a bit, top the cheese with some sautéed onions and/or mushrooms.
1 lb ground beef – $1.99
8 slices Aunt Millie’s wheat bread (2/$3) – $.63
4 slices Meijer American Singles ($.99) – $.16
1/2 bag Meijer chips – $1
1/2 Cantaloupe – $.75
- Shape ground beef into four round burgers, season with salt and pepper and grill until desired doneness. While the burgers are cooking, spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place one cooked burger on four slices of bread, butter side out, and top burger with cheese. Place the other four slices, butter side out, on top of cheese and grill each side of the bread until brown and toasty.
- Serve immediately with chips and cut up cantaloupe.
